My little one loves to play with this toy. He has learned to use the drill and socket wrench type tool. I love the carrying case to keep things organized. Overall a great buy- especially when on sale. And a toy that will be played with for quite a while.

Though this Design & Drill Toolbox from Learning Resources isn’t cheap, it does have considerable cross-gender educational play value. It’s well packaged and all the items can be stored in the toolbox with its transparent lid. I like the fact that this is depicted with a girl. After all, boys and girls will often see both men and women using real tools – reflective of how life is.All the items are very well made and should prove durable. This is a toy which, in terms of its functionality, goes beyond other similar items as the tools included are useable. Along with 2 building boards, there are 50 bolts in 4 colours and 15 nails. In the set is a hammer to drive in nails and bolts, a wrench – so bolts can be twisted, a working retractable tape measure and my 2 favourites, a pair of power tools which operate using two AA batteries each. First there’s a power drill – when it’s switched on, you can see cogs rotating inside it. Then there’s a power screwdriver which even has flathead, socket and interchangeable heads that can be used on the various accessories. In my view this set is a good quality toy and worth the money. Aspects of it will challenge younger children – relating shapes to each other, testing out what fits into what, learning how to manipulate the various tools and measuring things using the tape, then perhaps going on to write things down which could be a way to engage children at the older end of the suggested age range. This could be writing down and comparing measurements or asking children to describe or write about how they used elements of the toolbox. This is a great set to encourage children to become interested in how things work – as well as to begin to introduce ideas around notions of gender equality. I found this was a toy that made me think creatively too about how to encourage children to get the best out of it. I would recommend it.

This has been the perfect interactive gift for my two-year-old grandson. He enjoyed learning how to use the battery powered drill and screw driver. “Straight and gentle” was the lesson that he mastered rather quickly. We’re still working on understanding how to flip the switch to reverse the drilling action, but that will come soon enough. I wasn’t thrilled with the toolbox, because it was too tightly packed for a toddler to reassemble, so I ditched the toolbox and bought a plastic Craftsman toolbox that easily held the entire set of tools, breadboard, nails, and screws.
